Michael began an early career in governmental affairs and public relations after graduating and receiving his degree from Newberry College as an endowed scholar for political science. Starting as an independent study with Greenville, SC-based Brett Public Relations, Michael set himself on the fast track in South Carolina governmental affairs.

For over 22 years, he has lobbied before the South Carolina General Assembly, regulatory agencies, and the Governor’s office. Michael has served as the chief lobbyist for the South Carolina Association for Justice (formerly the SC Trial Lawyers Association) during some of its most challenging legislative battles, earning him the respect of plaintiffs’ lawyers, legislators, both Democrats and Republicans, and colleagues around the state. Michael still works regularly with SCAJ on their legislative initiatives and policy positions. In 2005, Michael became a Partner in Forge Consulting. His extensive skills, knowledge of the plaintiffs’ bar, expertise in negotiation, and dedication to advocating for plaintiffs led to his promotion to Principal in 2012. Michael is often brought in to help resolve complex litigation involving many issues, not only for the plaintiff but also counsel.

Michael’s passion for giving back to his community keeps him very active. He is a member of the Board of Directors for the Monday After the Masters (MAM), which has raised over $5 million for children’s educational programs and the SCJG Foundation since its inception, and he became a board member for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Georgia & South Carolina. He is also a member of the Crimson & Gold Society.

In 2019, Michael was named the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of the Midlands “Man of the Year” for his commitment to LLS and fundraising.

Most recently, Michael completed the Executive Presence and Influence program from the University of Pennsylvania, the Wharton School, Aresty Institute of Executive Education. While primarily traveling the southeastern United States for business, Michael makes his home in Columbia with his wife Amanda and his three children: Ava, Jude, and Claire.
